Music of Canada Day

The music of a person's life - especially a teenager's - is integral to understanding the world they exist in physically, mentally, emotionally, and perhaps existentially. Music does not control your thoughts or emotions, but can affect your perception and heighten feelings of hope, sadness, joy, hate, or affection.

These playlists and videos are not necessarily meant to be played while you read, but you certainly may do so, and it may bring a heightened understanding of the tug-of-war going on in the characters' hearts.
Playlist for Ch.3-7 at Shakers

Mark and Jay go clubbing at Shakers videotech to meet girls, only to learn it is a teen club, and Mark is denied entrance. Cassie comes outside to go for a walk with him until they can convince the doorman to let him in. Once inside, the music of 1986 (and some '84 & '85) is background to the drama of falling in love.

Music in this playlist is in the order it plays in the novel.

Playlist for Ch.10-11 at Lydia's Apartment

After the girls head home from Shakers, Mark and Jay go to visit their friend Lydia at her place, after work. She's a little more classic rock and puts on some Pink Floyd and the Beatles for background.

Music in this list is in the order it plays in the novel.

Playlist for Ch.19-22 at Cassie's House

Starting at the Burrard Street Skytrain station, Cassie, Mark, and Jay make their way to Cassie's house on the east side. Music plays as they run down the street, lounge in their rec room, and find love in her bedroom.

Music in this list is in the order it plays in the novel.

Music for Ch.32-33 - Lynn Canyon

This selection is a little different. The peace and tranquility of Lynn Canyon can be enhanced by the ambience of this first video, Relaxing River, but I really like to play the James Newton Howard score from King Kong rearrangement at the same time, especially in the Twin Falls scene.

Music for Ch.33 - Kitsilano

This is what I listened to while writing the Kitsilano Beach scenes for Canada Day - and what I listen to when I reread that chapter, myself. I think the combination of the ocean waves with the music encapsulates the peace in Mark's recovery and his and Cassie's solid affection.
